CURRICULUM/EDUCATION
ACADEMIC HALF DAY
Fellows have protected educational time every week for a dedicated didactic curriculum covering core Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine topics. Faculty-led sessions provide a structured learning experience designed to build foundational knowledge and prepare fellows for clinical practice and board examinations. Please see example Conference Schedule.
CONFERENCES
-
A collaborative, multi-institutional conference in which fellows present interesting or educational cases from one the participating institutions: Northern Westchester Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, North Shore/Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Staten Island University Hospital, and Vassar Brothers Medical Center. The disease focus rotates monthly, providing fellows and attendings with exposure to a broad range of pulmonary and critical care topics. The conference is widely attended by both fellows and faculty and provides an excellent opportunity for shared learning, clinical discussion, and multidisciplinary perspectives. Each Northern Westchester fellow will have the opportunity to present a case during their first year.
-
A local conference within our Pulmonary and Critical Care Department where current cases are presented to the group for peer review, collaborative discussion, and shared management planning. This is a great opportunity for imaging review for fellows and case-based learning.
-
A multidisciplinary conference involving Pulmonary, Radiology, and Thoracic Surgery, where lung cancer screening findings and pulmonary nodule cases are reviewed collaboratively. The group discusses imaging findings and clinical considerations to determine appropriate next steps for further evaluation, surveillance, or intervention.
-
Lung Institute Grand Rounds, organized by our Chair of Medicine, Dr. Bushra Mina, features presentations from leading experts in the field of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The conference provides fellows and faculty with updates on advances in the field, emerging research, and evolving approaches to patient care.
-
Monthly conference to present current or recently-published literature. Fellows will present and critically analyze a recent publication in the field of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, with discussion focused on the study’s methodology, findings, clinical relevance, and implications for patient care. The conference is attended by physicians from multiple local institutions, including Phelps Hospital and Putnam Hospital.
-
Fellows will present clinical cases from Northern Westchester Hospital involving an adverse outcome, with a focus on identifying opportunities for improvement, examining contributing factors, and developing strategies to prevent similar events in the future. The conference promotes a culture of learning, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement.
-
As a department, we regularly review ongoing quality improvement initiatives and provide fellows with opportunities to present their research or quality improvement projects at various stages of development.
-
A multidisciplinary conference between Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps bringing together specialists from Pulmonary Medicine, Rheumatology, Radiology, Thoracic Surgery, Transplant and Pathology. Complex cases are presented for collaborative review, with the goal of integrating each perspective to determine the optimal approach to diagnosis and treatment of interstitial lung disease. Fellows will have the opportunity to present their patients as well.
POCUS TRAINING
-
During fellowship orientation we have dedicated time for point-of-care ultrasound training with didactics on the basics of ultrasound and hands on sessions with volunteers to practice your skills.
-
Fellows will be enrolled in region-wide ultrasound course prior to the start of fellowship. They will be joining multiple PCCM fellowship programs across the NYC/metropolitan area for a POCUS Bootcamp hosted by Northwell.
-
Northern Westchester Hospital PCCM Division is equipped with 3 GE ultrasound machines available for fellow use. There are 2 machines housed on the inpatient floors and 1 in the ICU. The machines are integrated with PACS, allowing fellows to easily save and upload ultrasound images directly into the patient’s medical record as well as a virtual Cloud for attendings to indirectly supervise and review technique. Dr. Joshua Geltman is board-certified in ultrasound and can provide additional guidance for fellows interested in pursuing ultrasound certification. Maintaining a portfolio of saved ultrasound studies is particularly valuable for fellows planning to pursue ultrasound boards.
